English abstract:
With the raise of Integrated Management Systems (IMS) based mainly on the International Standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 research regarding Total-Quality-Management (TQM) has suffered a noticeable ease off in the past decade. Despite this trend TQM is still considered as a state of the art method to implement a company-wide understanding of a comprehensive quality management system and to achieve business excellence. It is often stated that especially small and medium sized enterprises benefit from the variability of the method and its barely existent regulations. This paper aims to develop an updated understanding of TQM under extending its functions with sustainability elements. Inputs for the extension of the known TQM-model are gathered both from international papers referring to the interfaces between quality, environmental and energy management systems and case studies of large scale Austrian companies with completely implemented Integrated Management Systems based on the three mentioned standards.
