English abstract:
Particle-reinforced metals (PRM) offer potential improvements in strength at room temperature compared with the unreinforced matrix alloy. The formation of a work-hardened zone around the particles due to the different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between the matrix and the reinforcement and a grain-refining effect are responsible for this behaviour. On the other hand, the mechanical properties at higher temperatures such us the creep resistance have shown to depend strongly on size, shape and volume fraction of the particles as well as on the production route determining the microstructure of the matrix.
During the presentation, the isothermal creep resistance of a 6061 wrought Al-alloy and a 2124 powder metallurgy (PM) produced Al-alloy reinforced with 22 vol % of Al2O3 and 25 vol% of SiC particles, respectively, will be correlated with microstructural features such as reinforcement size, precipitation condition and grain size. Although the wrought PRM shows a lower creep resistance than the unreinforced wrought matrix due to coarsening of precipitates, increase of the diffusion coefficient and loop punching of dislocations from the particles, the creep resistance of the PM composite can be improved when using reinforcing particles < 5µm. These results will be compared with the case of thermal cycling creep tests of the wrought PRM. Here, a "quasi-primary creep stage" during 1/3 of every thermal cycling dominates the plastic deformation of the composite for which the strain rate is approximately three times the mean strain rate during the thermal cycling creep test.
